Harnessing quantum science to transform how we sense, communicate and compute

Quantum technologies are opening new possibilities in sensing, communications and computing: more precise navigation and timing, detection of subtle changes in magnetic and gravitational fields, new approaches to imaging, and more secure digital communications.

These capabilities are already shaping the future of defence, security and critical infrastructure. Quantum sensing and metrology are enabling new approaches to navigation, detection and measurement, while advances in quantum computing and communications are driving new approaches to computing, cybersecurity and information security.

Connecting fundamental quantum science with real-world applications

At the University of Toronto, researchers develop quantum technologies from fundamental physics and device design through software and commercialization. Strengths in quantum sensing and metrology are complemented by work in quantum computing, communications and cryptography. Researchers work with industry and government partners to translate advances in quantum science into technologies that can be tested, deployed and scaled. These collaborations help build expertise and retain the economic benefits of quantum innovation in Canada.
